Circus Baobab

Description
Brave and uncompromising: in its new programme, Circus Baobab focusses on the resistance of West African women. The collective from Guinea has now established itself as one of the greats of African circus arts, combining modern circus elements with ritual dances. In its new piece Yongoyély (Susu for “tax collector”) it explores the situation of women in Guinea and West Africa, including female genital mutilation, marginalisation and self-empowerment. The Artistic Director Kerfalla Camara and director Yann Ecauvre are unafraid of any taboos and empower their protagonists to raise their voices through their artistry. With breeze blocks, wooden poles and whips, using aerial acrobatics, tightrope walking, hula hoops and dance elements, the artists work together with two dancers to express female empowerment in dialogue with tradition: the results are spectacular, touching and innovative.
